Back to reality…

1 10 2008

So, I’m officially back from Greece and I had a wonderful time!!  My trip to Greece came at the perfect time for me.  If you read this blog regularly, then you know why, if you don’t read this blog, then scroll down 2 posts and then you’ll know why.  My object for the trip was to clear my head, remove myself from the drama that was happening here, and to spend lots of quality time with my family while working on my tan.  I wanted my biggest worry to be making my tan even.  I left all my worries and anxities here in the states.

I believe that I accomplished that goal.  I feel refreshed and optomistic about the future.  I’m well rested, and I am thinking of going back to Greece for the holidays, just for a week, that is, if my parents don’t come out here for the holidays.  All I have to do is afford the ticket!!!

Now that I’m back, work has been going decently.  I’m not a big fan of my job.  But I am here because I need to pay the bills.  As are most people who work.  There are some changes going on in my department, some good and some bad, but we’ll see what happens in the end.

Although, I had a great trip, and work is going ok, I have had some awful days in the few days I’ve been home.  Upon my return, I noticed that my cat (he’s 19.5 years old) wasn’t feeling well.  At first, I thought he was stressed that I had been gone for a few weeks.  He’s always a bit ragged looking when I return from a trip.  At first, that’s what I thought, but in the first 24 hours of my return, I saw him go from bad to worse.  It was in his “worse” stage that I knew what was happwning to him, he was in Kidney failure.  I had seen the same symptoms before in another cat I had, who died 3 years ago.  Now, I knew it was happening to, Cat (yes, that’s his name, nothing else ever stuck).  So, I did the hardest thing I ever had to do, I made an appointment at the vet to have him…  I know it was the best thing to do for him, but I have had Cat since I was 13, and it was very difficult appointment to keep.  He was a wonderful cat, I miss him terribly!!

In my grieving, I feel like I have been sad for months.  In fact, I HAVE been sad for months.  I was sad in the last month or so of my relationship, I was sad when I ended my relationship and now I’m sad about my cat.  So, as of today, the sadness will end!!!  It’s a new month, and this month will be better than the last 4 months!!!

Stay tuned…

End of the Summer…

29 08 2008

It’s that time of year again…  This weekend is Labor Day Weekend, a weekend that traditionally signifies the end of summer.  :(

On Monday, I will be taking my yearly trip to Greece.  I will be gone 3 weeks!!  YIPPEEE!!!  Summer doesn’t end in Greece until October.  So, I will be basking on the beach for the next few weeks without a care in the world!!!  The pic you see above, I will be looking at that until September 23!!!  AAAHHHHH….

Have a safe and happy holiday weekend!!

SMOOCHES!!

Update: United Airlines Response #2

28 07 2008

Below is another letter that my friend Cheryl received from another Customer Care Manager.  Glenn Tilton is the CEO of United Airlines.  This is exactly the kind of response Cheryl was looking for, not the LAME ASS CRAP she got in the first email.

Glenn Tilton gave me your letter of July 21, and asked that I respond on his behalf with sincere apologies for the problems you reported while traveling with your daughter on Flight 943 from Paris to Chicago on May 24 and returning on Flight 942 from Chicago to Paris on July 18, 2008.

On its way to me for a thorough investigation, your e-mail letter passed through many hands at our company, with deepening concern that we had caused a disservice to you as a valued guest, whose top priority is maternal care and protection for the safety of your baby.

As a former flight attendant and in-flight safety manager, I was very disturbed to read of the behavior you described on the part of the flight attendants.  So I have requested reports from the crew members involved.  Knowing that there are many different brands of child safety seats on the market, it is in everyone’s best interests for crewmembers to collaborate with parents in order to install the child’s car seat so it that it meets both the FAA requirements, as well as the manufacturer’s instructions.  Peace of mind for the parent is essential, and I am deeply saddened by the perception that was created that other guests’ comfort took precedence over your daughter’s safety.

I admire you as a champion for your child’s well-being and would like to discuss the subject further if it is convenient for you.  I serve on the board of the Soong Ching Ling Foundation of the China Welfare Institute and am always striving to advance public awareness of children’s safety issues.   Aside from the technical issues of reserving bulkhead seats and bassinets on United airplanes – which we can discuss in detail if you are interested — I believe that you could teach us a lot from your perspective as a parent and consumer.  Please let me know a time and date when we can set an appointment for a phone conversation, and I will be happy to place the call to you in your time zone in France.   If you’d prefer to communicate via e-mail, that is fine, too.  The important goal is regaining your trust and confidence in United Airlines.

Subject: RE: FW: flight incident TEXT CORRECTION -Ref#: 7732173A

Dear Ms. Sasso,

It’s always good to hear from our customers but we are concerned with the reason that prompted you to communicate with us on this occasion.

I understand that you encountered the following:

1.  No record in the reservation for the bassinet.
2.  You did not receive the bulk head seat.
3.  You were not allowed to board first.
4.  Flight attendant’s behavior was not professional.
5.  You could not keep the car seat of your baby in a correct position.

I can understand how an experience like the one you described would be stressful.  Please accept our apologies for the concern caused you.  Let me assure you that the safety of our passengers and crew is always our top priority.  Our flight attendants have the training and ability to do a far better job than your comments indicate, and I apologize for your experience.  I have forwarded your comments to our onboard management for their review with the staff involved, to ensure that we do a better job in the future.

We realize that at times we are not doing as well as we should be in assisting our guests when there are circumstances that disrupt your travel.  While I realize that the performance of your flights does not demonstrate strong on-time performance, we have many improvement initiatives so your future flights go as planned.  These include increasing crew reserve staffing to aid overall reliability and designing a proactive equipment upgrade plan that will ensure we have mechanics stations where we need them and implementing standard work.  We appreciate your candid feedback very much as this allows us to share your experiences and to learn from them.

We cannot change the past nor return the time you lost but I would like to do something from a Customer Relations standpoint to express our goodwill and concern.  I have issued a $100 travel certificate for you enclosed along with this mail.

Appalling Behavior….United Airlines Should be ashamed….

22 07 2008

A friend of mine just flew on United Airlines on an overseas trip with her infant daughter.  Her horrible experience is described below in an email she just sent to the CEO of UAL, the Board of Directors and Customer Relations…

Dear United Airlines,

My name is Cheryl I am writing in reference to an unacceptable business practice, a flight attendant’s behavior and a serious safety issue.

I traveled on:
Flight 943 on May 24, 2008 from Paris to Chicago
and my return flight was
Flight 942 on July 18, 2008 from Chicago to Paris.

I am writing about two incidents that occurred, one on each flight.
I was traveling alone with my initially 2 month old infant, and at second flight, she was 3 months old. I chose United Airlines specifically for the reason that I was led to believe from the United website, that United is a family-friendly airlines that accommodates parents traveling long distances with small infants by having the use of a bassinet available with reservation.
I called United Airlines on 2 separate occasions: the second time, double checking that the bassinet was reserved for both flights. I double checked to find that there was no record of that reservation, but it would be added. I asked about the use of the bassinet and was told it can be used in any seat, laying at your feet if you are not in a bulk-head seat. I was also told that arrangements would be made at the airport to change my aisle seat to a bulk-head.

Upon arriving at the airport for our flight from Paris to Chicago I was told again that there was no record of a bassinet reservation and that no bulk-head seats were available but to speak with the gate crew about the possibility of switching with another passenger. To my dismay, I was told that all bulk-head seats were now sold for a PROFIT to members of a special club of customers who can afford $350 dollars a year for the PRIVILEGE of PURCHASING bulk-head seats, instead of these seats being assigned to passengers in need first. The gate crew told me to wait while they made an announcement to call other passengers to see if any would be willing to switch seats with me. I waited and listened. No further passengers were called to to the desk. In the meantime, members of above mentioned Privileged Club were asked to board first, while passengers with small children and special needs were not announced and completely disregarded, something that has NEVER happened to me or any of my friends or family on ANY flight ever taken. I made my way to the gate to board anyway, which I was allowed to do. When I reached the door of the aircraft, I again requested a change in seats, and was then left standing at the door to the aircraft, baby-in-arms, while the disorganized crew attempted to resolve the issue. All other passengers walked past me and boarded the plane, some making embarrassing comments about being on a long flight with a baby. When I was finally told I could not switch seats, I was last to board besides the man in a wheelchair , who then had to wait in the aisle for several minutes while I attempted to organize myself and my infant on the crowded flight. The space at my feet was not large enough to place a bassinet, contrary to what I was previously told, so one was never brought to me. Anyone who has ever had children can understand that a long trip with a tiny baby is difficult enough, without having to do everything with the baby in your arms the entire trip. My question is, what is the point in advertising the use of bassinets for small babies if the bassinets are not able to be used on the flights? This is an unacceptable business practice defined as a “Bait & Switch”.  The use of a bassinet was advertised and twice verbally promised, but never delivered.

My second concern is a serious safety issue that presented itself during an incident on my return flight from Chicago to Paris.
Again, I asked about the reservation of a bassinet when I changed my flight date on the paper tickets at the airport, 3 weeks before this flight. I was again told there was no record of a bassinet reservation, but one would be made. I was again told that arrangements would be made for a bulk-head seat at the airport when I arrive. At check-in, I was told no bulk-head seats were available, but was asked if I would like to PURCHASE extra leg room at the outrageous and unaffordable price of $97. The use of extra-leg room, I felt was not a luxury to be purchased, but was a necessity for the use of the bassinet I had reserved. I declined. I was told to speak with the gate crew about seating arrangements.  I asked the gate crew if they could help me out in any way, so that I may have the use of my reserved bassinet. They offered me the use of two adjoining seats and told me that I would be able to bring my rear-facing infant car seat (which was part of the stroller I was using) into the cabin and use it in the extra-seat. I was overjoyed that I would be able to have some much needed relief of holding my baby during the entire 8 hour overnight flight and that she would be safely strapped into a seat. This was to be a 19 hour door-to-door trip with my flight being the only time I could possibly rest. I boarded the plane and installed the seat rear-facing, according to the manufacturer’s instruction booklet, which I had just read cover-to-cover 2 days before the flight, as it was a new seat. This included a section titled “Aircraft Installation”. I double-checked the correct installation and position of the lap belt with the illustration printed on the side of the seat. I then realized that the position of the baby seat was preventing the woman in the seat directly in front of my infant to recline her chair. I kindly apologized to the woman for her inconvenience and was surprised by her very unkind response. The woman became irate and began yelling that I needed to change my seat because she HAD to be able to recline her seat. She then began attempting to recline her chair by forcibly pushing back on it which was visibly stressing the infant seat with my infant in it. I was afraid the infant seat would break and asked her calmly, “Please do not break my seat.” She then got up to get a flight attendant. A male flight attendant came to my seat and said, “Well, now I don’t know anything about these seats, but I know THAT is not the way that car seat goes. You need to turn it because this woman needs to be able to recline her seat.” I informed him that I HAD, in fact, installed the seat correctly and tried to show him the illustration on the side of the seat, which he did not look at.  He insisted that I had installed it wrong and said I needed to turn it forward-facing. I attempted to follow the flight attendant’s instructions and turned the seat forward-facing. At this point a man sitting behind me chose to get involved for some unknown reason. Without saying anything or asking my permission, he grabbed the back on my baby’s seat and pulled up on it, dumping my baby forward out of the seat and I had to quickly react to catch her just before her face would have hit the seat in front of her. The male flight attendant observed this and walked away. I checked the now incorrectly installed forward-facing seat to see if there possibly was a way to strap it down with the lap belt as he had said i must, and, of course there was not. So I did what any caring mother would do. I returned the seat to it’s correctly installed rear-facing position and strapped the seat down according to manufacturer’s instructions. As a mother traveling with a small baby, I can assure you that comfort of other passengers IS one of my main concerns. One of the last things I want is the embarrassment of trying to calm a noisy baby in an enclosed space. I will do anything reasonably within my power to keep my baby quiet and content so that she does not disturb and cause the discomfort of other passengers, but that does not and never will take priority over the safety of my child. The same male flight attendant returned to my seat, stood over me, and in a very condescending voice said, “Now what did I tell you? You need to turn the car seat, this lady needs to be able to recline her seat.” I was aghast with disbelief at the ignorance, hostility, and incessant humiliation I was faced with, in addition to the complete disregard for the safety of a 3 month old baby. I refused, stating that I would not compromise the safety of my baby for the comfort of anyone. The attendant continued to insist I turn the seat while admitting that he had no kids himself and did not know how to use the car seat. I asked him to then get someone who does know. He returned again with a woman flight attendant who also insisted I install the seat incorrectly for the comfort of the woman passenger. At this point I was so embarrassed by the situation, I agreed to turn the seat forward, against my own good judgement, FAA recommendations, and car seat manufacturer’s instructions, but I insisted the seat MUST be correctly installed for take-off and landing. Satisfied, the attendants left me alone, in tears with embarrassment, disbelief, and anger at what had occurred. I turned the infant seat forward for the duration of the flight, but quickly regretted this as the flight was turbulent and many times, the fasten belts sign lit up and I was not able to safely fasten my baby to her seat. I was so upset, I was unable to rest or sleep the entire 8 hour overnight flight, and have felt upset and disturbed by the events for days.

I would now like to quote from the car seat’s manufacturer’s instruction booklet.

“Aircraft Installation:  This child restraint is certified for aircraft use. Use on forward-facing aircraft seats only and in a position where the lap belt can be tightened securely. This child restraint is installed in an aircraft seat the same way it is installed in a vehicle.”

“IMPORTANT! Failure to follow the warnings on the labels and in the instruction manual can result in the death or serious injury of your child.”

“WARNING! Failure to place this child restraint [in bold red typeface] FACING THE REAR [end red typeface] of the vehicle when the child is between 5-22 lbs. (2.3-10kg) can result in serious injury or death”

“WARNING! Using this child restraint in any vehicle seat where the lap belt cannot be tightened securely and properly or where it can be loosened by pulling on it can result in serious injury or death.”

“WARNING! This child restraint must always face the rear of the vehicle.

“WARNING! Never place a child less than one year old forward facing.”

“WARNING! This child restraint should be securely belted in the vehicle even when not in use. In a crash, or sudden stop, an unsecured child restraint could injure other occupants.”

I would also like to quote from the FAA’s website:

“FAA strongly urges parents and guardians to secure children in an appropriate restraint based on weight and size. Keeping a child in a CRS or device during the flight is the smart and right thing to do.”

“Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using a CRS. FAA recommends that a child weighing:

  • Less than 20 pounds use a rear-facing CRS”

The fact that it was insisted upon me that I go against every one of these above safety warnings and recommendations so that another passenger could be more comfortable is unreasonable and dangerous. United Airlines placed my infant in harm’s way and did not maintain safety as their number one priority. This is NOT an acceptable behavior from an airline and I will report this incident to the FAA.

The flight attendant’s condescending and rude behavior to me was unacceptable. He also showed complete disregard for the mistreatment of an infant by two other passengers.

I am requesting two personal apologies, one from United Airlines which addresses all 3 issues: that of Bait & Switch, flight attendant behavior and the placement of an infant in a dangerous situation.  The second apology I am requesting is one specifically from the male flight attendant who treated me and my infant so unkindly.

I am also requesting the reassurance that all flight attendants will be trained in the proper installation of rear-facing infant seats for the safety of all babies traveling and the avoidance of future incidents like these for their parents.

Sincerely,
Cheryl XXXXXX

My friend told me this story first hand, and seeing it in writing just makes me sick!!  United should be extremely ashamed of themselves!!

It’s the end of an era…

16 07 2008

Today marks the end of a great era.  My mother has sold our beach house!!!  :(   For the better part of this decade I have spent my summers on the beaches of Greece.  Well, one beach in particular… the beach located in Nea Hora in Chania on the island of Crete.  Pictured to the right…

But I guess all is not lost…

We still have a lovely house in the village with a distant view (the above headline pic on this blog is our view) of the sea.  It’s only a 10 minute drive down to the beach.  The water is much much cleaner at the Kalives Beach.

Also, there is no threat that an earthquake will collapse the house.  The beach condo is located in a building that is in desperate need of reinforcing.  My mother no longer has to pay condo association dues.  The beach condo building will eventually need a new boiler, a new elevator, the toilet in the bathroom leaks… yada yada yada.    So, while it’s sad that we are losing a place that has a wonderful view, we are not sad about losing the burden that goes along with it.

Gross Green Gunck…

3 07 2008

I was flipping through the channels last night and I saw a report on the BBC news about the blue-green algae problem that China is having.  It seems that the ocean waters are soooo polluted that the sea is creating tons and tons of algae.  All this algae is being created where Olympic sailing events are supposed to be held.  GROSS!!!!  The Olympics are about a month away the Chinese better get their asses in gear and the the crap up.

It’s also funny that I had to find out about this on the BBC new and not on my local news.  These local news stations in Chicago really need to beef up their international news headlines!!

Here are a couple of pics I found online…it’s sooo gross!!!

Return to Self…

18 06 2008

For the past several months, I have been spending a lot of time with the BF.  He got a new job and he had to move, so I’ve been spending a lot of weekends at his house helping him finish his remodeling project.  Needless to say, I’ve been spending so much time with him that I’ve neglected my own friends and my life.

Now it’s time I return to myself.  It started last weekend, Friday night I attended a friend’s 30th birthday party, solo.  Then Saturday night, I had a girls night out with a couple of my girlfriends from high school.  Oh no, firends, it doesn’t stop there…  This weekend on Saturday, I am going to have another girls day, with another group of friends.  The plan is to spend the day at a frou frou fitness club.  The kind that people spend the day at.  They have an on-site spa, restaurant and pool on the roof.  Then after that, we’re going out for drinks and then dinner.  A very excellent girls day out.

I’ve also decided to go ahead and book my yearly trip to Greece, without the BF.  He’s been very wishy-washy about booking a ticket and commiting to a date range.  So, I told him the other night that I was going to book my ticket and if he wanted to meet me out there he was more than welcome, however, I wasn’t going to wait for him anymore.  So, THERE!!!

I see that my life is moving on, with ot without me.  I prefer it move on with me!  I’ve decided that I’m going to back off from seeing soo much of the BF.  This summer is my summer.  I don’t want to end my relationship with him, because I love him to death.  I believe that pulling back just a bit and re-entering my life, I’ll be more self-assured and therefore, become more attractive to my BF and myself!!

Indy 500…Or Bust…

27 05 2008

I attended my first race car event ever on Sunday.  My BF took me to see the Indianapolis 500.  I’m noImage Hosted by ImageShack.ust a race car fan myself, I’ve never actually sat and watched the Indy 500 or any other type of car race.  Although, recently I have seen snippets of some races because my BF is a HUGE fan of this type of stuff.  I didn’t know what really to expect.  I knew it would be a sight!!  I knew I would see drunks and lots and lots of Hillybillys!!!  But other than that I thought it would be a 2 or 3 hour race and then we would go home!!

I can’t begin to explain what I saw or what I experienced!!  It’s unlike anything I’ve ever been to before.  Now, I’ve been Image Hosted by ImageShack.usto Grateful Dead Concerts and Lollapalooza Concerts, but neither of those compare to what I experienced over the weekend.  People camped out for days and days before the race.  We parked in a field about a mile from the track.  The field was filled with tents and campers and people tail-gaiting.  People were passed out amongst empty beer cans and bottles of cheap vodka.  It looked like a huge continuous party had been going on for days.  Good times!!

Did I mention the characters I saw?  There were plenty of characters!!  There were characters!!  People spreading the word of the lord amongst people spreading The Herps!

Here are a few more pics…

These pics were taken within the first hour.  When we finally got to our seats, wait, let me re-phrase, when we finally got to our bleacher, I was pooped!!  The race hadn’t even started yet!!  I was in awe of the spectacle of drunkards and attendees!!  It’s supposedly a “family event” but it was farrr from it!!  There were party revelers everywhere!!  When the track lets you bring in your own cooler full of food and beer and they have a designated area what they call the “Party Deck”, you know it’s going to be a good time!!

Here are a few more pics from inside the track…Image Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.usImage Hosted by ImageShack.us

All in all, it was a good day!!  My first Indy 500 went off without a hitch, I even made it onto TV.  These last few pics, Danica Patrick was hit by another driver in front of where I was standing, so I got a few choice pics of the situation!  I had a great time with the BF!!  He always takes me to the nicest places!!  I hope when I take him to Greece he will be just as impressed!!

Happy Earth Day…and other such musings

22 04 2008

It’s April 22.  Happy Freakin’ Earth Day!!

Second note of business.  Work.  Not going so great these days.  Plan B plans are going slow!!

Tomorrow is a dreaded day for yours truly.  I have been summoned to the suburb of Hoffman Estates by my boss for a meeting.  This is NEVER good.  I KNOW it’s not going to be good for me.  I have been told in such terms that I am going to be put on a performance plan.  Not good at all!!  It’s kind of like a probation, for 90 days, I am going to be put under an even heavier microscope.  Within said 90 days, if I mess up in any way, I can be fired!!  No questions asked!!  UGH!!  What makes matters worse is that I think they “the leadership people” are going to move me to Hoffman Estates, which is not good either!!  It is sooo not a commutable distance for me.  It’s like 50 miles one-way in heavy traffic everyday.  Also, with gas prices at almost $4 a gallon, there is no way I could afford to make the drive.  The train is much much cheaper!!!

So, anyway, here I am, with a huge pit in my stomach, dreading tomorrow.  Oh well, I shall survive!!
